WHAT IS SS-31 (ELAMIPRETIDE)
SS-31 (ELAMIPRETIDE) is also known as Bendavia or MPT-141. It is a synthetic tetrapeptide (i.e. 4 amino acids long) that was discovered by scientists Hazel H. Szeto and Peter W. Schiller in the early 2000s. This is why it is more commonly known as a Szeto-Schiller (SS) peptide.
SS-31 (ELAMIPRETIDE) is very unique in its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and highly concentrate within the inner membrane of the mitochondria (IMM).
SS-31 shows promise in the treatment of many neurodegenerative and cognitive disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer’s, Friedreich ataxia, traumatic brain injury and glaucoma.

HOW DOES SS-31 (ELAMIPRETIDE) WORK
Mitochondria play a vital role in cellular metabolism. Because of their widespread effects on cellular functions, mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in a wide range of diseases.
SS-31 has been shown to reverse mitochondrial dysfunction by obliterating damaging inflammatory agents such as free radical oxygen species (ROS).
SS-1 (ELAMIPRETIDE) function in the body revolve its relationship with a lipid molecule located in the inner mitochondrial member (IMM) known as Cardiolipin. By binding to cardiolipin, SS-1 prevents the accumulation of free radicals thereby acting as a potent antioxidant; it reduces apoptosis, prevents the malfunctioning of mitochondria.
WHAT IS THE DOSAGE OF SS-31 (ELAMIPRETIDE)
There is limited data on proper dosing and protocol of administration for SS-1(ELAMIPRETIDE).
SS-1 (ELAMIPRETIDE) is supplied in 50 mg per ml in a 6 ml vial (300 mg per vial)
Suggested dosing is:
Intravenous Infusion: 0.01 mg/kg/h – 0.25 mg/kg/h over 4 hours via intravenous infusion
Subcutaneous daily injections range from 4 or 40 mg injected once a day. The Recommended dose is 20 units (0.2.ml) or 10 mg per day
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF SS-31 (ELAMIPRETIDE)
SS-1 (ELAMIPRETIDE) has little to no side effects.
Most common side effect is:
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Mild redness/swelling at the site of injection
